The challenge of supplying product information

The increasing popularity of web shops requires complete, and at all times up-to-date product information. Due to the lack of one-on-one contact with a salesperson, obsolete or incomplete information in an e-commerce environment is not corrected. Obsolete or incomplete product information in the webshop can lead to a lower conversion rate.

Wholesalers therefore place increasingly higher demands on the product information provided by manufacturers. Delivering high-quality article information on time is time consuming, error prone and could be complicated. It is a challenge for the manufacturer to meet this demand in a structural and organised manner for the various wholesalers.

PIM systems simplify the work

In order to manage, enrich and deliver product information in the right formats, Product Information Management systems, also known as PIM systems, have been created. Instead of keeping track of product information in different systems and Excel files, a PIM system offers a central place where all information can be managed. For example, information about price, discount, description, stock and availability.

The advantage of data pools

A good PIM system contributes to the timeliness and quality of the product information and thus increases sales orders. However, this does not alter the fact that product information has to be delivered to various wholesalers in various ways. This still takes unnecessary time.

Industry and purchasing organisations respond to this by streamlining the exchange of product information between manufacturers and wholesalers using data pools. A data pool offers one central source of e-commerce-friendly, high-quality product data, where manufacturers provide product information in a uniform manner and wholesalers extract high-quality data.

In order to guarantee the quality of product information in the data pool, industry and purchasing organisations impose requirements on the product information and the method of delivery. For example, the EDATA data pool uses the ETIM classification, the most widely used classification standard for the construction and installation industry in Europe, as a quality standard and product information must be delivered in its own Exel format or in BMEcat.

Professional PIM systems, like DataProcessor TJ, help companies to classify data according to standards such as ETIM.
